Top 6 Ways to Maintain a Better Erection

As much as we men covet our penises, we do a lot more harm than we realize to it.

Charles Walker, M.D, assistant professor of urology and cofounder of the Cardiovascular and Sexual Health clinic at Yale University recently revealed, “A lot of guys know their lifestyle is harming their health, but it isn’t until it begins to affect their sex life that they start to listen.” If you are wondering what some of the causes of low testosterone, diminished sex drive and inability to attain erection can be caused by, you might be shocked to hear that many high-risk behaviors we partake in could be the root of the issue. These behaviors could lead to irreversible erectile dysfunction (ED), Dr. Walker says.

Aside from excellent nutritional supplementation, here are 6 things you can do to keep your penis standing at attention.

  1. Read the Labels in your Medicine Cabinet:

    Read the Bottle Lable

You would be surprised to see that many medications still list erection problems as their side effects. These can range from anti-depressants, some blood pressure medicines and even Propecia for hair growth. However, the little secret you probably never knew is that your allergy or cold medicine may be causing you some issues. “The mechanism behind an erection is the exact opposite of having an adrenaline rush, and Sudafed acts very similar to epinephrine, the adrenaline hormone, killing any ability to get aroused,” says Harry Fisch, M.D., clinical professor of urology and reproductive medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College/New York Presbyterian Hospital, and author of Size Matters. It is important to read labels carefully for side effects.

  2. Work Should Stay at the Office:

    Read the Bottle Lable

"Work-related stress is a huge issue for sexual function,” says Dr. Walker. “I see a lot of guys in their 40s and 50s who are highly successful but in high-stress jobs, and a lot of them have ED.” Why, you may ask? Many me with highly demanding jobs often feel like they cannot leave the everyday stress at work. This anxiety follows them home and wreaks havoc on their ability to bring their sailor to full salute when it counts in the bedroom. All work and not enough sleep and exercise can be two big contributors to ED. It is important to know when to turn it off which can help you get it up. Dr. Walker recommends, “Don’t work when you get home, don’t work on vacation, and incorporate more stress-relieving activities like exercise.

  3. Go to Sleep at a Reasonable Hour:

    Read the Bottle Lable

Although the late nights out may be fun, you might be surprised to know that a lack of sleep can have a dramatic impact on your erection. A recent study from the University of Chicago found that sleeping 5 hours or less notably reduced testosterone levels of healthy young men by 10 percent after only a few days. Dr. Walker explained that, “Sleep affects free testosterone, the part that isn’t bound by proteins and is free to do what your body needs it to do, including support your libido and sexual function,"

Dopamine and serotonin which are regulated by sleep also help balance the brain hormones that have an effect on your erection. Lack of sleep has a great impact on testosterone levels. Ideally, you want to get 7 or 8 hours of sleep a night.

  4. Ease up on the Booze:

    Read the Bottle Lable

Although a few drinks may help boost your confidence at the bar, it may also be working against you in the bedroom. A recent study from the University of Washington found that alcohol has a direct effect on erection. To make matters worse, long term heavy drinking can leave lingering effects on erection. A 2013 study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found reformed alcoholics had higher rates of ED compared to men without excess drinking histories. You probably have heard this before, but alcohol is a depressant. This means that you’re not only less likely to get aroused, but also more exhausted and too tired to get things going in the bedroom. The best bet is to put your cap at about 2 drinks in any given night.

  5. Kick the Smokes:

    Read the Bottle Lable

You might think that smoking is just impacting your lungs but Dr. Walker has some startling news on it’s impact on your erection. “Everyone knows smoking is bad for your health, but most people don’t realize there is a direct relationship between cigarette smoking and ED,” says Dr. Walker. Smoking can damage the lining of your blood vessels, which affects the smooth muscle in your penis and inhibits blood from flowing in. A 2011 study in the British Journal of Urology International demonstrated that men who kicked the habit for 8 weeks had thicker and stronger erections than those who relapsed. A major note in the study was that these improvements were not seen until the men also stopped using any nicotine patches, giving a very serious nod to the fact that nicotine itself can be playing a part in erectile dysfunction.

There is no denying the reality that our habits can often be the root of the cause to a lot of our erection issues. These suggestions are just some of the more common ways we may be sabotaging our sex lives. New research has found that that men can take supplements to help improve not just their sex drive but also the strength of their erections. A few of the top supplements available today contain all natural ingredients which help with erection size and improved blood flow. Supplements like Predoxen and Red Rhino are all natural male enhancement supplements that stimulate growth, stamina and can help you even overcome some bad lifestyle habits impacting your erection.
